Fashion Macabra

For this piece I tried to create a darker and more avante gard design aesthetic without going too over the top. This dress is something that can be worn to a funeral, black mass, or any formal social outing. Some features that make this black dress stand out is the shape and the two straps, one wide strap which goes over shoulder and another more thin strap which goes around the neck. Believe it or not, I actually made this out of a pair of old black curtains. I tend to recycle a lot of fabrics because I do not always have access to fabrics and I do not like to waste materials because it is damaging to the environment. A good fashion designer is also a thrifty fashion designer. One feature of this dress which does not seem to stand out as much in the photos as they do in person are the rungs of the curtains which wrap around the torso like a kimono, while reflecting design concepts from fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto.

In making this piece I improved my innovation skills and continued to gain experience in draping fabric, pinning, sewing, and fit. Creating the classic black dress with a fresh twist was an excellent exercise in design. This black dress also looks great with just about every color of accessories. Black accessories on this black dress gives the outfit a subtle and darker look, while brighter accessories such as white or yellow pop and create more of a statement.
