New Dress Form Vs. Garment Reconstruction

My big Christmas present this year was an adjustable Singer dress form. I must say I was incredibly happy to finally be able to own a dress form that did not fall apart (literally) every time I touched it. The dress form I owned previously was a form that I happened to find in the basement of my dormitory. It was in terrible condition, but it was the best I could get. Luckily, Santa, or shall I say Mom and Dad, had gotten me one for Christmas.

After assembling it, I immediately began to properly drape fabric for the first time. I had no fabric to work with, so I took an old pair of khaki Dickie's pants that were old and ruined, and I began to take them apart to reconstruct something amazing out of an old pair of pants.

My first attempt at making something awesome seemed to be going smoothly. I converted one pant leg into a tube styled dress. Then, I took the other pant leg and turned it into a bell sleeve. Finally, I took the top of my deconstructed pants where the belt loops were, and turned that into a stylish belt which camouflages into the actual outfit. I got a lot of mileage out of a single pair of pants. But when it came time to sew it together, I accidentally messed up some of the fabric and was unable to execute my original design.

After this set back, I ended up changing the design completely into a very intrecate top. My design idea was basically deconstructed angel, in while the piece looks like it has been reconstructed into something new. As for the angel, I decided to add shredded wings on the back. The front of the top is not as busy as the back. I attempted to drape a very stylish sleeve and collar. Finally, I tried to make a very deconstructed flower out of fabric and bunched up thread.

So now I have this pinned up on my dress form. I do not know how on earth I am going to sew this piece together. I am not sure If I like the back or not. It doesn't seem to photograph well or flow much with the front of the garment. Though, my idea is supposed to be clean on the front, chaotic on the back. I may alter this completely.

My problems so far with working with a dress form:
1. Fit. I do not know how to properly fit an outfit.
2. Taking the piece off of the form. In an attempt to take the piece off, I cut it off, but realized that isn't the correct way to get your outfit off of a form.

I have a long road ahead of me, and a lot of learning to do. It's not as easy as it looks.
