Wrap, Go, and Shred

An oldie but a goodie. This dress is a piece I constructed out of toilet paper. An outfit made out of toilet paper obviously is going to run into conceptual problems, hence why you never see people walking around in toilet paper. Some bad things about this dress is that you could only wear it a few times, and you could never wash it unless it can survive a trip to the dry cleaners.

I decided to make this dress for various reasons. My first reason was because at the time I didn't have any fabric supplies to work with. The second reason is becuase toilet paper is a good fabric to practice garment construction with. It's cheap, comes in bulk, and disposable (which doesn't seem to help make this piece functional). My final reason is because it follows my concept of fashion design which is clothing that involves interaction and that can be changed to your specific likings so that each time you wear a piece, you can wear it differently each time. I love the idea of constantly being able to wear the same article of clothing say five times, and each time you wear it you cant alter certain pieces so that way it's as if you have five different pieces

With this dress, the original design was choppy and shredded as you can see in the picture above. To keep it from being too boring, I added a few solid colored belts. It added some color and something new. It is easy to make this piece seem elegant and simple, then switch it up by ripping it up into something more edgy and young. By having articles of clothing like this you can wear the same dress to a club, hoe down, or show that you wore to your prom. It is also a stylish conversation starter. Making clothes out of materials like toilet paper allow the person wearing the clothing the capability to reconstruct clothing with out a sewing machine. A piece like this can even be worn as a wedding dress. It would be a hell of a lot less money, and something alot more interesting than the typical white wedding dress.
